International Women’s Day 2025: A Call to Action to Accelerate Progress towards Gender Equality

International Women's Day 2025 is not just a celebration or a moment of reflection, but also a call to action. Governments, businesses, communities and individuals must work together to accelerate progress towards gender equality.

Throughout history, women and girls have played a fundamental role in shaping societies, driving innovation, and leading transformative change. Yet, despite these invaluable contributions, gender inequality persists across political, economic, and social spheres.

International Women’s Day (IWD) 2025 stands as a rallying call to reinforce a commitment to rights, equality, and empowerment for all women and girls, regardless of age, race, background, or circumstance. This year’s theme, “For ALL Women and Girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment.”, highlights the urgent need for an inclusive, intersectional approach to gender justice, one that ensures no woman or girl is left behind.

The Unfinished Fight for Rights

Women’s rights are human rights. Yet, even in the 21st century, millions of women and girls worldwide continue to face systemic barriers that hinder their full participation in society. From wage gaps and political underrepresentation to limited access to education and healthcare, gender-based disparities remain entrenched in many aspects of life. Women make up nearly half of the global population, yet they hold only a fraction of leadership positions, earn less than their male counterparts, and are disproportionately burdened by unpaid care work.

Violence against women and girls remains a critical issue, with gender-based violence affecting one in three women globally. Whether in the form of domestic abuse, workplace harassment, or conflict-related sexual violence, these injustices violate fundamental rights and hinder progress toward equality. Legal frameworks must be strengthened, social norms must shift, and systemic barriers must be dismantled to create a world where women’s rights are fully realised.

Equality: Beyond Words, Toward Actions

True equality extends beyond policies and rhetoric; it requires sustained action, accountability, and cultural transformation. Equality means ensuring that women and girls have the same opportunities, resources, and rights as men and boys, not just in principle but in practice. This entails tackling deeply rooted biases in education, employment, healthcare, and governance.

Education is a powerful equaliser, yet millions of girls worldwide remain out of school due to poverty, discrimination, or conflict. Investing in girls’ education is not just a moral imperative, it is an economic necessity. When girls receive quality education, they are more likely to become empowered leaders, contribute to their communities, and break cycles of poverty.

Workplace equality is another key pillar of gender justice. Closing the gender pay gap, ensuring paid parental leave, implementing equitable hiring practices, and fostering inclusive work environments are essential steps toward real gender parity. Governments, corporations, and civil society must collaborate to remove structural barriers that hinder women’s career growth and financial independence.

Empowerment: Elevating Voices, Breaking Barriers

Empowerment is about amplifying women’s voices, increasing their agency, and ensuring their participation in decision-making processes. Women must not only have a seat at the table but also the power to shape policies, lead industries, and influence societal change.

Women-led movements have historically been at the forefront of social and political progress. From the suffragettes who fought for voting rights to the activists driving modern feminist movements, women have continually challenged oppressive systems and redefined what is possible. Today, young girls and women around the world are leading climate action, advocating for racial justice, pioneering STEM advancements, and driving economic innovations.

Technology and digital inclusion play a vital role in modern empowerment. Access to digital tools and platforms enables women and girls to access information, build businesses, advocate for their rights, and connect with global networks. However, the digital divide remains a challenge, with women in many regions facing barriers to internet access, online safety, and technological literacy. Bridging this divide is crucial for achieving true empowerment.

Intersectionality: Ensuring No One is Left Behind

The fight for gender equality must be intersectional. Women and girls experience discrimination differently based on race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, disability, and other intersecting identities. Addressing these overlapping forms of inequality requires policies and initiatives that recognise and respond to these unique challenges.

For example, Black and Indigenous women face compounded barriers in employment, healthcare, and justice systems. Women with disabilities often encounter inaccessible infrastructure and discriminatory hiring practices. LGBTQ+ women and non-binary individuals face unique forms of marginalisation. A truly inclusive movement for gender equality must ensure that the voices of the most vulnerable and marginalised are centered in the conversation.

The Role of Men and Boys in Gender Equality

Achieving true equality is not solely a women’s issue, it is a societal imperative that requires the active participation of men and boys. Challenging harmful gender norms, advocating for fair policies, and fostering inclusive environments are responsibilities that belong to everyone. When men support gender equality, workplaces become more diverse, families become more balanced, and societies become stronger.

Boys must be taught from an early age that leadership, ambition, and strength are not exclusive to one gender. Schools, media, and families must promote positive masculinity, one that embraces respect, empathy, and shared responsibilities.

The Path Forward: A Collective Responsibility

International Women’s Day 2025 is not just a moment of reflection, it is a call to action. Governments, businesses, communities, and individuals must work together to accelerate progress toward gender equality. Here’s what we can do to make a tangible impact:

  1. Strengthen legal protections for women and girls. Push for laws that ensure equal pay, protect against gender-based violence, and support reproductive rights.
  2. Invest in education and economic opportunities for women. Support initiatives that provide scholarships, mentorship, and funding for female entrepreneurs.
  3. Promote workplace equality. Advocate for transparent pay policies, equitable leadership representation, and family-friendly workplace policies.
  4. Support women’s health and well-being. Ensure access to quality healthcare, including maternal care, mental health services, and reproductive rights.
  5. Challenge gender biases in media and society. Encourage diverse representation in leadership, entertainment, and advertising.
  6. Engage men and boys in gender equality efforts. Promote allyship and responsibility in dismantling patriarchal systems.
  7. Bridge the digital gender divide. Ensure women and girls have equal access to technology, digital skills, and online safety measures.
  8. Support women-led movements and organizations. Donate, volunteer, and amplify their work to drive systemic change.
